DLI Throws Support Behind Americas Act

Organization urges members to support sustainability legislation

LAUREL, Md. — The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) recently announced its support for the Americas Trade and Investment Act (Americas Act), introduced to Congress by Senators Bill Cassidy and Michael Bennnet, and urges its members to support it, as well.

“This move marks a significant milestone in promoting sustainability and innovation within the textile care and fashion industry,” DLI said in its announcement. “This bill aims to advance a circular economy, where resources are reused, repaired, and recycled to minimize waste and environmental impact.”

Embracing Sustainability

“This initiative was brought to our attention by Chris White with America’s Best Cleaners, who is a member of the American Circular Textiles Group,” says Mary Scalco, DLI CEO. “Legislation that will bring more clothes to dry cleaners is something we don’t have to think too hard about supporting. Members can show their support for the Americas Act by contacting their elected officials using the tools on our website (DLIonline.org/AmericasAct)”.

DLI members can play a crucial role in advocating for sustainable practices within the textile sector, the organization states. Passage of the bill, DLI believes, would benefit dry cleaners by providing access to new business opportunities, including textile recycling programs, repair and alteration services, and sustainable practices that attract environmentally conscious consumers.

Americas Act Legislation

The Americas Act proposes more than $14 billion in incentives to promote domestic textile reuse, repair, and recycling. The American Circular Textiles Group shaped key sections of the bill, specifically Sections 232 and 199b, DLI states in its announcement, focusing on textile circularity. DLI believes its members’ support for this legislation will help drive positive change and support a more sustainable industry.

“DLI invites its members and other industry stakeholders to support this transformative initiative,” the organization says in its announcement. “Together, industry professionals can influence positive change, amplify impact, and create a more sustainable world for future generations.”
