NORTHBROOK, Ill. — As the weather turns colder, Zengeler Cleaners’ Libertyville stores are accepting items for their annual “Coats for Vets” collection drive. This event collects winter coats, jackets and other seasonal apparel that will be distributed to veterans throughout the northern Illinois area.
All types of clothing and accessories are needed during the drive, including blankets, gloves, hats and seasonal apparel, as well as coats and jackets, says Tom Zengeler, president of Zengeler Cleaners. “The need for donations increases every year and we can only provide that support with the help of generous individuals in the community.”
The dry cleaner is again teaming up with Libertyville Rotary Sunrise for the event. Once donations are gathered, the Zengeler team will inspect, repair as needed and clean every item, then deliver the renewed items so they can be distributed in time for Veterans Day on Friday, November 11, 2022.
The drive set a new record in 2021, collecting 7,148 coats and jackets, along with hundreds of scarves, gloves and other winter clothing. The organizers said that this was double the number of items donated in any previous year.
“This is an especially challenging time for veterans who have difficulty finding meaningful work when their service time is up, particularly for those who served in combat zones,” continued Zengeler. “Imagine having to brave the cold and snow of northern Illinois winters without having the right clothing. Sadly, more veterans than ever are in need of both clothing and housing, as well as food and jobs. Libertyville Rotary Sunrise has taken up this cause because they understand the need to support our heroes. Please join hands with us as a way to say ‘thank you’ to those who serve and protect so we can enjoy our way of life.”
Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Nov. 1, at either of Zengeler’s Libertyville locations, or can be given to any member of Libertyville Rotary Sunrise.
