WESTBROOK, Maine — The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is pleased to announce that Pratt Abbott Cleaners, based here, has received the U.S. SBA’s 2018 Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award for Maine, it notes.
“Being a family-owned business drives our commitment to our staff and our community,” says David Machesney, company president. “It’s a big part of our company culture, so this award means a lot to all of us,” he added.
“Pratt Abbott Cleaners has grown tremendously under David’s leadership and the company is well regarded for its contributions to the community; particularly the Coats for Kids Initiative,” says Amy Bassett, SBA district director for Maine.
The firm has been selected for this award for its longstanding success, family ownership and contributions to the southern Maine community.
“I am very pleased to recognize this long-term family owned business with an award that means so much to SBA in New England,” adds Bassett.
Machesney has led Pratt Abbott for 17 years, with his father running the company before him. Currently David is mentoring his daughter, Emily Machesney, who recently joined the family business.
She says, “I’ve been blessed to grow up in the family business and to be exposed to the industry at a young age. This award is very inspiring, and I’m excited about the future of our company.”
The cleaners was nominated for this award by Catherine Wygant Fossett, executive director of the Institute for Family Owned Business.
The firm was honored at the 2018 SBA Small Business Awards Celebration on May 1, 2018, at the Harraseeket Inn, 162 Main Street in Freeport, Maine.
