WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it has added the Five Points plume in Woods Cross City, Utah, to its National Priorities List (NPL) of Superfund sites. The plume of perchloroethylene contamination is thought to have come from a drycleaning plant once located at a nearby strip mall.
While four municipal drinking-water wells are in danger of perc contamination from the plume, the city says water is safe to drink and is monitoring it to ensure it meets Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Perc concentrations could increase over time if the contamination is not addressed, EPA says; the NPL listing makes the Five Points plume a priority for cleanup and eligible for federal cleanup funds.
