NORTHBROOK, Ill. — The pandemic cut into almost every celebration, tradition and gathering in our society in 2020. Now that vaccinations are becoming widely available and life gets back to something approaching “normal,” one question on the minds of many high school students is, “Will there be a prom this year?”
While most schools probably won’t be back into full swing by the time prom season rolls around this year, Zengeler Cleaners is keeping one of its charity drives — The Glass Slipper Project — up and running just in case.
The drive, which takes in donations of prom dresses, shoes, jewelry and other accessories for high school senior women, is still accepting these goods for the time when they are needed again. The cleaning company, which organizes the drive with area high schools and the Mothers Trust Foundation, has operated the campaign for the past 20 years.
“Although most proms have been cancelled since 2019, Zengeler Cleaners has continued to receive prom-related donations,” says Tom Zengeler, president of the 164-year-old dry cleaner. “We remain in contact with Mothers Trust and Glass Slipper, assuring both organizations we have an ample supply of dresses and accessories for whenever senior women may need them. We will proudly continue our support for these organizations and the students they serve.”
Zengeler Cleaners inspects, repairs, cleans and professionally stores the dresses and accessories until they are needed. “Zengeler Cleaners appreciates the ongoing generosity of high school students and their families who continue to donate to this worthy cause,” continued Zengeler. “As we look forward to returning to more conventional times, our hope is that high schools can resume their regular traditions next year.”
