49th Annual Plant Design Awards: Merit Awards (Part 2 of 2)

Jerry’s Cleaners, Naples, Fla.
Left in charge of the business after founder G.B. Fyke’s death in 2007, Diana King and the Fyke family decided it was time to update the 4,500-square-foot plant’s workings while preserving its 1950s style.
They started by “finally” installing central air in the call office, King says, and didn’t stop there. They put in new floors, ceiling tiles, insulation, ceiling fans, lighting, baseboards and chair rails. They freshened the façade with flagstones and installed a new awning over the drive-thru.
Today, the plant has a tasteful midcentury-modern look and smooth workflows that will help it succeed for the next 40 years.Master Cleaners, Lubbock, Texas
Master Cleaners’ new, 10,660-square-foot plant is located in the fastest-growing part of a city national news outlets are calling the best place to start a business — and the spacious, freestanding building offers plenty of room to grow.
The plant places drycleaning and laundry on opposite sides of its MetalProgetti automated assembly conveyors; operating thee Columbia/Ilsa and Marvel units, it puts out more than $35,000 in orders per week.
The plant offers customers a covered drive-thru, while employees take advantage of a full breakroom. And operator Sam Burke enjoys a Texas-sized office suite with a hand-carved executive desk bedecked in pony skin.’Our Cleaners, Barrie, Ont.
Ali Merani designed his 3,450-square-foot plant-on-premises to fit a unique, two-tier price structure that distinguishes basic from hand-finished quality. The plant places three finishing cells (silks, pants and coats) in just 240 sq. ft. of floorspace, reducing steps for operators.
The plant uses Veit tensioning equipment in finishing and a high-end Sosei water-softening unit to reduce detergent use in wetcleaning. The latest addition is a new Unipress Lightning shirt unit.
The layout encourages optimal workflows and ease of maintenance from mark-in through bagging, while public areas are homey and inviting. Examples of ’Our’s gown-preservation expertise flank the single service desk.Click here for Part 1 of this story!
