Hallak Cleaners Marks 60 Years

Family-owned couture cleaner plans open houses and a coat drive

NEW YORK and HACKENSACK, N.J. — Hallak Cleaners, a family-owned couture dry cleaner serving the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

The company began in 1955, when Joseph Hallak Sr. opened Eiffel Cleaners in East Orange, N.J. In 1966, he opened Hallak Cleaners on Second Avenue in Manhattan. Today his sons carry the business forward. John-Claude and Joseph Hallak Jr. oversee the company's retail locations and production operation, while Robert Hallak specializes in interior, suede and leather care.

The brothers remain involved in the day-to-day work, from customer service to garment care, and continue to uphold the standards their father established. After 60 years, the company says in its announcement that its greatest source of pride is the relationships it has built along the way.

Six Decades of Growth

Hallak's ties to the industry go back a long way. In 1972, the company appeared on the cover of American Drycleaner, and Joseph Hallak Sr. was featured as a spokesperson in a full-page New York Times advertisement for Barneys.

The company opened a 5,000-square-foot production plant in Bergen County in 1983 and later added pickup and delivery service. In 1994, it opened a 12,000-square-foot facility dedicated to Joseph Hallak Sr. In 2009, Hallak became New York City's first GreenEarth-licensed dry cleaner.

Hallak handles everything from everyday wardrobe pieces to couture, formalwear, wedding gowns, leather, suede, fur, handbags, down and outerwear, along with fine household textiles and specialty collections. It also provides garment care, uniform cleaning, restoration, repair and after-sales services for design houses and luxury brands.

The company is a member of the National Cleaners Association (NCA), the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI)  and the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists (AWGS), and is part of America's Best Cleaners (ABC). It serves clients in Manhattan, Bergen County, Westchester, Greenwich, Short Hills and, during the summer, the Hamptons.

Anniversary Open Houses

To mark the milestone, Hallak will host open houses at both of its retail locations:

New Jersey store (172 Johnson Avenue in Hackensak): Oct. 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
New York store (1232 Second Avenue): Oct. 8, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Clients, friends and neighbors are invited to stop by at any time during the day. Light refreshments will be served.

The celebration will also include a collection for NCA Coats for Kids. New and gently used coats of all sizes will be accepted at both locations.
