CHICAGO — Of planned DLI seminars, one featuring alternative solvents garnering most pre-show interest

CHICAGO — Roughly one-quarter of those responding to this month’s American Drycleaner Wire survey say they are planning to attend Clean ’13 in New Orleans, while another 36.8% are unsure at this point.

Approximately 37% of those responding to the unscientific survey say they will not be attending the biennial event slated for June 20-22 at the Morial Convention Center.

Asked about the biggest factor in favor of attending (whether they were personally planning to attend or not), 42.1% of respondents named “Exhibits of equipment and supplies.” Roughly 11% listed “Combining business and pleasure” as the chief factor, while equal shares of 5.3% look to Clean primarily for its “networking and socializing” opportunities or “educational sessions.” For a sizable portion (36.8%), “It’s all of the above.”

The Clean Show has been shortened from four days to three this year, which is OK with 52.6% of respondents. Approximately 16% “don’t care for this change,” and the remaining 31.6% are “indifferent.”

CHICAGO — Unlike last February, no help from weather this year

CHICAGO — Dry cleaning sales were a mixed bag in February, with two regions reporting minimal to modest gains while the other two lamented losses around 6%, according to results of this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com StatShot survey.

An unseasonably warm, dry winter helped sales rebound in February 2012, but the weather wasn’t quite so favorable this February.

The West had the largest month-to-month sales increase at 3.5%. The South followed with a slight bump of 0.5%. Respondents from the Midwest and the Northeast saw their sales fall into the red—by 5.3% and 6.6%, respectively.

“Volume is down. Nothing else has changed dramatically, but sales have dropped off in first-quarter 2013,” says a cleaner from the Northeast. “We are down almost 5%, and I am trying to figure out why.”

“Conditions are stable but not improving,” says a Midwest respondent. “January sales gains were wiped out by snow days in February.”

HANOVER, Mass. — Franchise looks to bring signature services overseas

HANOVER, Mass. — Lapels Dry Cleaning has built its franchise upon environmentally friendly dry cleaning methods, “outrageous” customer service and marketing, the company says, and now it’s looking to bring those signature services abroad with a new international division.

“I believe there are markets outside the United States that will be as strong, if not stronger, because of the lack of quality competition and the importance of quality garments and the care of those garments,” says Michael Eisner, director of franchise development for Lapels. “Over the years, we have been inundated with requests for franchising from overseas.”

“Being able to have your garments cleaned in an affordable and timely fashion that doesn’t negatively impact the environment is something that’s appreciated everywhere, not just in the U.S.,” says Lapels CEO Kevin Dubois. “With this new division, we are currently speaking with Franchise Partners from across the world and anticipate opening our first store within 2013.”

CHICAGO — More than 60% use video cameras and 50% use alarm systems to deter crime in their businesses

CHICAGO — Google the terms “dry cleaner” and “robbed” and you’re likely to find several news reports of incidents that have occurred in the last month or so. Yes, dry cleaners’ cash business can be an attraction for robbers, and minimally staffed drop stores can be targeted.

In this month’s AmericanDrycleaner.com Wire survey, members of the trade audience were asked if any of their stores had ever been victimized by criminals. Nearly 43% of respondents said their businesses had been victimized in the past.

Of those incidents, 83.3% involved an “in-person robbery of cash or merchandise” and 66.7% involved a “property crime such as burglary or vandalism.” One-third of respondents also said someone in their store had been involved in a “physical assault or serious violent crime” or “another type of crime,” including receiving counterfeit bills. Just 16.7% said they had been victimized by a “fraud or confidence game that cheated the business.”

CHICAGO — Marketing budgets for year varied, with operators in South boosting spending 2.2% in 2012

CHICAGO — Sales grew in two of four regions of the United States in November, according to this month’s StatShot survey. Dry cleaners in the West reported the biggest surge, with sales up 5.3% from November 2011. Sales in the South were up 2.9%.

“A few years ago, I competed against other dry cleaners,” says an operator from the South. “Now, I compete more with restaurants, movie theaters, gas stations and any other business that is fueled by discretionary spending.”

In the Northeast, sales were virtually flat, with operators there reporting a 0.3% decline. “High-end business is good, if you can handle the risk,” says one operator there.

Midwestern operators saw their November sales fall 1.5% from the previous November. Views of the future in that region appear mixed.
